ELK GROVE, CA - Today, the Bera campaign announced that frontline regional, statewide, and national groups fighting for equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) Americans endorsed Ami Bera for Congress in California’s 7th Congressional District.
Bera is endorsed by EQCA, one of the leaders in California’s fight for marriage equality and the state’s largest LGBTQ advocacy group; the Sacramento Stonewall Democrats, who successfully wrote, lobbied, and passed the City of Sacramento’s Equal Benefits Ordinance; and the Human Rights Campaign PAC, the political action wing of the world’s largest LGBTQ civil rights group.
All three groups, whose mandates include working to elect LGBTQ candidates and their allies, and advancing equality, credited Bera’s demonstrated commitment to fighting for equal rights in their endorsements.
“As a doctor and as a Representative, Ami has been a strong ally to the LGBTQ community in Sacramento County and nationally through his commitment to advancing equal rights for all people, no matter their gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation,” said Jann Dorothy of the Sacramento Stonewall Democrats. “We know he’ll keep fighting until LGBTQ people and their families have the rights they deserve.”
Bera advocated for workplace anti-discrimination laws and has promised to continue supporting legislation that would guarantee an end to workplace discrimination against LGBTQ workers.
"Our communities and our country are stronger when we support and respect all families, and all individuals have equal rights,” said Rep. Ami Bera. “I’m proud to stand with the LGBTQ community, and I’m going to continue fighting until all people -- whoever they are, however they choose to identify, and whoever they love -- have equal rights under the law.”
In contrast to Bera’s outspoken advocacy for the LGBTQ community, the Sacramento Bee reported that Scott Jones stated “Gay marriage I am completely indifferent to.”
